I love love love the new Beauty and the Beast movie. One of the best parts, of course, is the Beast’s library, so I wrote “Belle Would Be Enchanted by These 10 Lovely Libraries in Hotels” for USA Today 10Best.

jenny craig – again!

Jenny Craig freezer

A friend of mine asked me how I don’t weigh 300 pounds after all my traveling and press trips where half the activities revolve around food.

There is literally only one reason: Jenny Craig. [Read more…]

how a cochlear implant improved my dad’s life

Dad and meThanks to Cochlear for sponsoring this important post. All opinions
are, as always, my own.

When I told my dad Cochlear was sponsoring this post so I could share his story, he was thrilled.

You see, my dad had a cochlear implant nine years ago at the age of 79. He had lost all hearing in his left ear after being exposed to extremely loud noises – the kind many of us are exposed to regularly – on a couple of occasions.

Back in 1964, a mechanical sound from an amplifier during a show rehearsal at the high school where he worked affected the hearing in his left ear to such a degree that he hasn’t used that ear when he talks on the phone since then. [Read more…]

cochlear helps children hear

Cochlear - signs of hearing loss babiesThanks to Cochlear for sponsoring this important post. All opinions
are, as always, my own.

As parents, our greatest hope for our children is that they have the opportunity to live their lives without limits. We celebrate each developmental milestone with a mixture of joy and relief.

But what happens when you suspect something is wrong and your child is not hitting those milestones?

Hearing loss is often responsible for children falling behind, and Cochlear understands that it’s about so much more than hearing. [Read more…]

jenny craig week 4.5

Extraordinary Desserts coconut cream

Let me preface this by pointing out that whoever came up with that saying, “nothing tastes as good as skinny feels,” obviously never took a bite of this.

Let me also point out out that this is not a Jenny Craig food 🙂

Okay, so I was supposed to go for my Jenny Craig weigh-in last Thursday but I postponed it because I thought I had jury duty. (The court was actually closed that day but that’s a whole other story.)

I also postponed it because I had that coconut cream deliciousness from Extraordinary Desserts, above, for Michael’s birthday.

And a large popcorn during the screening of 50 Shades of Grey.

And this roll from our favorite sushi place, Katana. [Read more…]

Breakfast of champions 🙂

I wasn’t planning to write about Jenny Craig again until next week but I was so shocked at my weigh-in this morning, I had to share with you. [Read more…]

i’m baaaaaack!

Jenny Craig progress sign

Okay, I put back on all the weight I lost last year — all 30 pounds — plus some.

I’m a little disgusted with myself.

But, since my word this year is “improve,” I’m back at Jenny Craig and I’ve already lost [Read more…]

always discreet at cvs, plus a great giveaway right here!

Always Discreet

This is a sponsored post. All opinions are, as always, 100% mine.

I always use Always. Always, meaning, yes, sigh, still. If they’d been around for 44 years, that’s how long I’d have been using them by now.

In fact, I will probably always use Always.

You see, I’ve been loyal to the brand since its inception in 1983 and, now, because I’ve reached an age that apparently requires a whole new product, they’ve come through with Always Discreet right in time to save me embarrassment, just like they’ve always done. [Read more…]

electric bikes

Cathy and Paul Rogers

My NaBloPoMo post for today was picked up by Huffington Post so I hope you’ll head over there to read and comment.

Maybe you remember my experience on the Pedego electric bike when I was in Long Beach? I was so intrigued by the whole idea of electric bikes, I did some research and discovered Cathy Rogers, a 57 year old woman who was able to ride across the country — more than 3000 miles — because she had the electric bike. In fact, she was the first person to do that.

Cathy’s story is inspiring, and I hope you’ll read my interview with her on Huff/Post 50. I’m actually going to write a couple of other posts about Pedego electric bikes, too, because I’m convinced they have the potential to keep baby boomers feeling younger for a long, long time and help us reach otherwise unachievable goals.

Have you ever ridden an electric bike?

Alzheimer's statistics

Banner Alzheimer's Institute sponsored this post. Opinions are mine.

Julianne Moore is already receiving Oscar buzz for her role in Still Alice, the upcoming movie based on Lisa Genova’s bestselling novel about a 50-year-old Harvard professor who is diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s disease.

The story is so powerful and sobering, I can’t stop thinking about it.

In fact, I test myself every day on the name and address Alice’s neurologist asks her to remember — that she can’t.

John Black. 42 West Street, Brighton.

Because November is National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month and also National Family Caregivers Month, it seemed like the right time to tell you about some hopeful and innovative research projects taking place to combat Alzheimer’s and how you can get involved. [Read more…]

whole foods market’s whole bodycare

Whole Foods coupon

My daughter is so smart. For years, she’s been buying all her hair and body care products at Whole Foods, and I could never understand why she just wasn’t going to the drugstore.

Well, last week, I attended a fascinating event in the Body Care section of Whole Foods in La Jolla, and got quite an education. From now on, I will be skipping the drugstore, too – because, well, see this?

Whole Foods ingredients

It’s the list of ingredients not allowed in Whole Foods Premium Body Care products.

Many of those ingredients are in the products I use used to use every day. No more. [Read more…]
