3 hotel incidents: what would you have done?

Posted on September 20, 2016

bell

Because I travel so much, it’s no surprise that sometimes things just don’t go right.

I’ve had three hotel incidents in the past few years that I still think about. Luckily, none of them were terrible because I think I only handled one of them properly — although, honestly, I’m not sure I would have done anything differently for the first two even now.

I thought I’d share these with you to get your advice and get you thinking about what to do if you find yourself in one of these situations someday — which I hope you won’t! more »

happy national tequila day!

Starr Pass tequila

Well, I am apparently at the right place at the right time since it’s National Tequila Day and no one celebrates the occasion better — and more often! — than JW Marriott Starr Pass in Tucson, Arizona.

Every day at 5:30 p.m. guests gather on the aptly-named Salud Terrace for the highly-anticipated Tequila toast.

Starr Pass features more than 150 artisan tequilas and each day they offer a complimentary shot of a different one. For last night’s toast, we enjoyed Maestro Dobel Silver Tequila which I learned “has won more gold medals than most Olympians.” That seems to be true for Starr Pass’ own tequila collection, as well. more »

langham huntington, pasadena – club level

Langham Club Lounge

Now that I whet your appetite yesterday, I’m excited to tell you about the Club at Langham Huntington, Pasadena, which is definitely worth a splurge for a special weekend.

It’s basically the concierge floor and, although we’ve enjoyed staying on those at dozens of hotels, nothing prepared us for The Langham Club experience.

We’re grateful to Langham for giving us this opportunity because — well, let me show you. more »

Langham Pasadena

I am dreaming about the Langham Huntington today so I thought I’d share our visit there with you so you can dream about it, too. (Or, even better, plan a vacation!)

A few months ago, Michael was invited to participate in a poetry reading at Vroman’s, a fantastic book store in Pasadena, California. He had once stayed at the Langham Huntington in Pasadena on a business trip and LOVED it, so we booked a room and were excited that the hotel generously offered to host us on their Club level.

Okay, I can’t even begin to tell you how amazing Club level is — but I will tomorrow! more »

Fathom Travel recycling

Thanks to Fathom for partnering with me on this sponsored post. All
opinions are, as always, 100% mine.

Fathom’s 704-passenger vessel, the Adonia returned from its inaugural voyage to the Dominican Republic last Sunday and, according to my friends who were on the trip, it was an amazing experience. I’ve been following along closely because I’m hoping to go in June.

Fathom is Carnival Corporation’s latest brand and what makes it so special is that it’s dedicated to social impact travel. Voluntourism is one of the fastest-growing trends right now, and it’s one in which I’m especially interested. In fact, I recently wrote a piece for USA Today’s 10Best about it and, of course, included Fathom. more »

Oaks at Ojai Pixie Tangerine Month

Not that you need another reason to visit the iconic Oaks at Ojai but April is Pixie Tangerine Month and that just sweetens the deal.

So, when I was invited to spend a couple of days at the spa, I booked myself a ticket on Amtrak and headed north. more »

shout-out to our viking star family!

Viking Star Lois and captain

Michael and I are still raving about our Grand Mediterranean Tour aboard the Star, Viking’s first ocean cruise ship last month. It was probably the best cruise we’ve ever taken.

Although, obviously, we love to travel, we’re usually ready to come home, especially after being away for 15 days. But, for the first time ever, both of us kept asking how we could stow away for a couple more weeks. We have never felt like that on any cruise before.

A huge part of the credit goes to the amazing crew. Although the ship itself is magnificent, it’s the people who always make or break a trip, and the people on the Star are equally magnificent, starting at the top. more »
