The Wednesday List
Hope you’re hanging in there. I’m finishing my fourth jigsaw puzzle so that shows you how I’m doing.
As a grounded travel writer whose most exciting destination in the past four months has been Costco, I was thrilled to go on my first virtual press trip the other day. I’ll admit Tempe, Arizona had not been on my radar but, after “visiting” some of its sights and learning about its focus on art, it’s someplace I really want to experience in person now. I had such a good time, and actually felt like I was there. Have you been to Tempe?
Because Michael and I are really craving a change of scenery, we’ve been spending an hour or two every night with The Durrells in Corfu. This PBS series is about a British widow who moves to Greece with her four kids, and it is just a joy to lose ourselves in their lives. Thankfully, there are many seasons of this wonderful show!
We also watched Palm Springs on Hulu, which is a light and enjoyable kind of Groundhog Day. Make sure to watch until the end of the credits!
I found a new series of travel books that are so beautiful, I guarantee you’ll want all of them. I’ve spent many happy hours in the pages of The World’s Most Amazing Places and The Complete Guide to the National Parks but my favorite is The World’s Most Amazing Castles. I find myself escaping into it over and over, imagining myself quarantining in someplace like Highclere Castle. The book even features a foreward by Lady Carnarvon – or, Lady C, as I like to refer to her 🙂
Michael and I will be celebrating our 39th anniversary in August, and I’m very excited about reading What Makes a Marriage Last by Marlo Thomas and Phil Donahue. They’ve interviewed 40 celebrity couples for the book, and will be appearing with one of them – the incredible Lily Tomlin and Jane Wagner – at a special online event presented by Left Bank Books on July 30. To attend this private Facebook Live, all you have to do is buy a copy of the book through Left Bank Books, and they’ll send you a free ticket. This will be such a fun event and I hope to see you there.
I’m also looking forward to attending A Path Forward, sponsored by Warwick’s, on August 20. Presented by the National Conflict Resolution Center, this online event features authors Robin DiAngelo and Ibram X. Kendi discussing their books, White Fragility and How To Be An Antiracist, in conversation with Wesley Lowery, author of They Can’t Kill Us All. This feels like a must-attend, and you can register for free here.
In keeping with last week’s “Please scream inside your heart” theme, let me leave you with this. You’re welcome.
Keep those emails coming! Please share The Wednesday List with your friends, and encourage them to subscribe here. Let me know what you’d like to see by emailing me.
Until next week,
