The Wednesday List
If you want to sum up 2020 in one phrase, here it is: Japan recently opened its amusement parks but there’s one caveat. You can ride to your heart’s content but you have to ride quietly because screaming might spread coronavirus. So riders have been told to, “Please scream inside your heart.” And there you have it. The slogan for 2020, and something most of us have been doing every single day since November 2016.
Because she’s right on the pulse of our feminine rage, Stephanie Rohr has created a great cross stitch pattern so you can hang that reminder to use your indoor scream on your wall. For $6.00, you can download it, print it out and immediately get crafty. Stephanie is the author of Feminist Cross Stitch: 40 Bold and Fierce Patterns, which just might get you through the next few months.
Variety called Jenny Slate’s new movie, The Sunlit Night, an “aggressively cute comedy” that “only works if that’s your thing.” Well, apparently that’s my thing because I loved watching it. First of all, I would never describe it as an aggressively cute comedy and, second of all, it’s about a young artist (Slate) who heads to the Norwegian Arctic for an apprenticeship, which is basically my dream. The movie has a feeling of melancholy, gorgeous scenery and music that I added to my Spotify playlist. It’s available on demand Friday, July 17 and you can watch the trailer here. (And it makes me want to read the book by Rebecca Dinerstein Knight.)
Another movie worth a watch is Flannery, a fascinating documentary about author Flannery O’Connor. I had only recently read A Good Man is Hard to Find (I know – I was an English major. WTF?) and was riveted by her work and her personal story. Her Southern perspective is especially controversial right now, and the questions about racism are thought-provoking and relevant. This is a really interesting time to watch and discuss this movie, which features writers like Alice Walker and Mary Karr weighing in on the importance and relevance of her work. It’s also available on demand on Friday, July 17 and you can watch the trailer here.
I started reading The Girl from Widow Hills by Megan Miranda on Saturday and finished it on Sunday. I love a good thriller, and this one really kept me turning pages. Highly recommend!
I’ve been listening to books on Audible in bed before I go to sleep, and was completely enthralled by Trevor Noah’s Born A Crime, his autobiography of growing up in South Africa at the end of apartheid. The fact that he became who he did is simply amazing, and hearing his stories in his own voice is such a treat.
A good narrator is key to a good audiobook experience, and I’m savoring Glennon Doyle narrating her new book, Untamed. She is so inspiring and so down to earth, it’s like listening to your BFF share her secrets and give you unfiltered advice because she only wants the best for you. It’s raw, honest and life-changing.
