The Wednesday List
96 days until the most important election of our lifetime. Make sure you’re registered to vote (do not assume anything other than the fact that this administration will do everything they can to tamper with the election), request an absentee ballot if you can and have every eligible member of your family do the same. You can also help Moms Rising get out the vote by signing up to send postcards to registered voters who have sat out past elections. They’ll send you 10 pre-addressed, pre-stamped postcards for free, and all you have to do is add a personal message and stick them in the mailbox. Let’s save our democracy, people.
I’m just about finished with the Viva La Vida Frida Kahlo puzzle – you can see part of it in the image above – and it’s been one of my favorites so far. The colors are so vibrant and the pieces so shiny, it makes me happy to work on it. I will definitely be buying more puzzles from eeBoo, a company that bills itself as Woman Owned, Mother Run, Sustainably Run. Can’t beat that.
While I’ve been doing puzzles, Taylor Swift has been using quarantine to write her masterpiece. Folklore was released on Friday and it’s already turned the music world upside down. Stripped down and moody, it’s an album focused on storytelling, and it’s just stunning. I have been listening to it on repeat since it came out, and will be continuing to do so for the near future.
The other album getting me through this insane time is Gaslighter, from one of my all-time favorite groups, the (Dixie) Chicks. Heartbreaking, angry and occasionally humorous, this is a really emotional album dealing with the trio’s personal issues – divorce, loneliness, raising children – and the state of the world. In signature Chicks style, it is beautifully written and, despite its subject matter, ultimately empowering
I’m trying to catch up with all the good books out there, and am reading The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett during the day and listening to Tom Hanks narrate The Dutch House by Ann Patchett before I go to sleep at night. I highly recommend both.
What have you been watching lately? I’m planning to check out We Are the Radical Monarchs, an award-winning documentary on PBS about the young girls of color who make up this alternative to Girl Scouts and are all about social justice. And, as a huge fan of The Moth, I’m looking forward to spending an hour and a half with We Rise: Stories of Community, Resilience and Irrepressible Joy.
I like to leave you with something uplifting so enjoy this look at an elderly couple who create their own unique fashion shoots here.
Keep those emails coming! Please share The Wednesday List with your friends, and encourage them to subscribe here. Let me know what you’d like to see by emailing me.
Until next week,
