No one likes a cheater. But, boy, do we like songs about cheating.
And that’s what this week’s Twisted Mix-Tape Tuesday is all about.
The first song that came to my mind, of course, was Your Cheatin’ Heart. Duh. That’s not really a song I care about, though, so the next one I thought of was Carrie Underwood’s Before You Cheat, which I love but I think a lot of people will choose.
So, thankful that I have no personal experience in this area, I turned to my iPod for inspiration and found these five gems – plus my post title, which comes from Springsteen’s Rosalita, of course. Feel free to add your own choices in the comments or join the BlogHop here.
Two Black Cadillacs by Carrie Underwood
Do not mess with Carrie Underwood. As she warned us in Before You Cheat, she’ll dig her keys into the side of your pretty little souped-up four wheel drive and carve her name into your leather seats. In this equally powerful story, two women meet for the first time at the funeral of the man they shared. The dark twist may put a “crimson smile” on your face, too.
Lyin’ Eyes by The Eagles
Hmmm … I featured an Eagles song last week, too. And I just might feature one every week. Their storytelling is so simple yet so profound, and the catchy tunes belie the depth of the lyrics. This tale about a woman trapped in a loveless marriage (“I guess every form of refuge has its price”) is a sad, painful look at life on the cheatin’ side of town.
Should’ve Said No by Taylor Swift
Leave it to young T. Swift, as my daughter refers to her, to get right to the heart of the matter. Her parents obviously taught her well that life is all about making good choices (although, admittedly, she’s had a hard time doing that in her relationships). Raised on brand messaging and taglines, she understands and reminds all of us that, when faced with temptation, sometimes you have to just say “no.”
In Times When My Head by Carly Simon
One of the things I love about this song is that the woman is not the victim. She admits to her own affair and how it forever colored the way she looked at love.
Hit ‘Em Up Style (Oops!) by Blu Cantrell
Talk about making someone pay for their transgressions! This song takes that idea literally – and it’s a hoot!

I had thought about using a hip hop/R&B genre this week because Hit ‘Em Up Style was one of the first songs I’d thought of. Definitely get his attention and hit him where he’ll notice it hurts first, in the wallet…”Make him pay for it all.” That’ll wake him up to all the other things he lost. Great list!

Blu Cantrell, l-o-v-e! Great music mix Lois. I will either be late meeting you or late to the blog hop… I’m thinking the latter but, what else is new this month? Thanks for the inspiration!

Outside of “Lyin’ Eyes” I don’t know ANY of these songs (well, okay, I know “Rosalita”) — no video links are showing up, so I’ll have to go old school and enter them into YouTube myself! I’m intrigued by the Blu Cantrell song and I cannot believe there’s a Carly Simon song out there that I don’t know!

So glad you’re back. First, found out about Blu Cantrell from Just Dance 4. And love her. She’s good at cheating songs! Also Lyin Eyes, personal favorite of all time. Also… Rosalita! I love that song!!!
Meanwhile, in general, such a great mix, love the way you thought about it. I tried to pick songs I didn’t think people would choose. WRONG 🙂
Hope to see you next week, it’s a blast having you!

Fabulous! Almost makes me want to go through a break up just so I can crank them up. But, next Tuesday’s playlist may be love songs. I’ll hang strong and wait it out. 😉
