We cheer every time we see these words on a t-shirt, so we were thrilled to learn the origin of the quote in a new book named after it. Historian Laurel Thatcher Ulrich — author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning “A Midwife’s Tale” — coined the expression in a scholarly article more than 30 years ago, and it has proudly taken on a life of its own ever since. In her book, Ulrich goes back in time to celebrate women like Virginia Woolf, Elizabeth Cady Stanton and a quartet of Harriets who cleared the path for Hillary Clinton’s historic bid for the presidency. Destined to become a staple of women’s studies classes, this is a book that will enlighten, empower and encourage a new generation of girls to get out there and make some history of their own.
