Being a woman in Afghanistan is hard enough. Now imagine being a woman running for president there. That’s the challenge Dr. Massouda Jalal faced in Afghanistan’s first democratic election ever – and, although she didn’t win, she did come in sixth out of seventeen candidates, opening a lot of people’s eyes and becoming a role model for a new generation of females.
“Frontrunner: The Afghan Woman Who Surprised the World” is a fascinating documentary about a process we take for granted – although, perhaps not surprisingly, cheating already became a major issue in this first-time election.
Dr. Massouda Jalal’s mission is inspiring and empowering as she spreads a message of life and hope rather than fear and violence.
You’ll get chills when this brave woman says, “I wanted a new Afghanistan to be built by the hand of a mother,” and you’ll cheer when she announces with a smile that she will not give up until she wins.
