Rarely has a woman been so appropriately defined by her name. Since she first appeared onscreen in 1951, Grace Kelly set the standard for beauty, elegance and, of course, grace.
The epitome of old Hollywood glamour, Grace earned a Golden Globe and an Academy Award nomination for her role in “Mogambo,” making quite an impression on director Alfred Hitchcock, who featured her in “Dial M For Murder,” “Rear Window” and “To Catch a Thief.”
In 1956, Grace was named the Golden Globe’s World Film Favorite Actor, Female — the perfect end to a whirlwind acting career cut short by her marriage to Prince Rainier Grimaldi III of Monaco. Again, it was only fitting that Grace would become a Princess, although unfortunately she wouldn’t get to experience the happily ever after.
Grace tragically died in 1982, when her car went off a cliff in Monaco, but her influence lives on through her classic movies and through a surprising variety of songs referencing her by artists like Madonna, Billy Joel, Mika and Eels.
