I remember watching The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel with Michael during an early screening and just grinning through the entire movie. We loved it.
In case you haven’t seen it — which you should — it’s the story of a group of British retirees who get sucked in by ads for the newly-restored Marigold Hotel and decide to move to India, where the standard of living is less expensive and the culture seems exotic and exciting. The accommodations end up being far from luxurious and nothing ends up the way they planned. In many ways, though, it turns out better.
The movie was nominated for a Best Picture Golden Globe and a Best Actress award for Judi Dench, who stars with an amazing cast including Maggie Smith, Bill Nighy and Dev Patel.
Thankfully, they’re all back — with Richard Gere! — for The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, opening Friday, March 6 in theaters around the country.
This time around, Sonny (Patel) is trying to expand after the success of The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel for the Elderly and Beautiful. He’s also trying to get married to the love of his life! As the demands of a traditional Indian wedding present challenges all around, his residents navigate relationships of their own while newly named co-manager Muriel (Smith) attempts to keeps track of everyone.

I’ve been waiting for this film! Our tour guide in India in 2013 is also an actor and the morning our tour began he auditioned for a role in it. He didn’t get it, but we were rooting for him. A fun giveaway.

The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel is my husband and my favorite movie, we have it on DVD and on our DVR and watch it every night before we go to bed. My favorite line is when Muriel says about waiting 6 months to get a hip replacement, “At my age, I don’t even buy green bananas.” My husband’s favorite line is “If she dies, she dies.” Ok gotta go watch it….
