“the great alone” book giveaway

The Great Alone

Thank you to St. Martin's Press for sponsoring this post
and giving me the opportunity to share this amazing book.

I loved everything about Kristin Hannah’s latest novel, The Great Alone, except for one thing: I didn’t get any work done this weekend because I could NOT put the book down.

I was so invested in the characters, I couldn’t wait to see what was going to happen. But I was also trying to read slowly because the writing is so good and the story takes place in a remote area of Alaska, a setting in which I always imagine myself. (Don’t get excited. I’m too much a creature of comfort to actually do it, which is probably why reading books that are set there are so meaningful to me.)

The Great AloneThe Great Alone is an epic coming of age story but it’s so much more. It’s a love story — well, a couple of love stories — as well as an ode to The Last Frontier and the people who live there.

The book starts out with 13-year-old Leni being told her family is going to move again. Her dad, a former POW still experiencing PTSD, has been left a house in nowheresville Alaska by his Army buddy, and he is excited about taking his wife and daughter to live off the grid there.

That is all I’m going to tell you because it is so much better to let the story, with all its joys and terrors and hopes and disappointments, unfold as you quickly/slowly turn the pages.

The Great Alone is a story about fighting to survive despite seemingly insurmountable obstacles — both natural and manmade. It’s a tribute to the human spirit and to the awe-inspiring power of nature.

It made me want to visit Alaska again.

And it made me want to join a book club again so I could discuss this rich novel in detail!
