Oh, how long we have all been waiting for this one!
I was lucky enough to see Downton Abbey last week, surrounded by the stars at the London premiere, and I am happy to report it is just a joy to watch. You will laugh, you will cry, you will leave wanting more.
I’m only going to give you a brief summary of the movie because, having had a key Downton Abbey scene SPOILED for me back in Season 3 (you know exactly which one I’m talking about), I am very sensitive about giving away anything that might ruin it for someone.
As you’ve already seen in the trailer, the main story revolves around the King and Queen’s upcoming visit to Downton Abbey. Of course, there are lots of sub-plots involving romance! scandal! a missing dress!
Some of this feels contrived and silly but it doesn’t really matter because what we’re all here for are the characters. After six seasons of getting to know them intimately, we are fully invested in what happens to them. And, of course, we want to swoon over the gorgeous costumes and settings. And, yes, the dog.
I’m convinced that one of the reasons Downton Abbey is such a hit is that we all need an escape from this crazy world and the relentless pace of technology. Going back to a time of civility — at least on the surface — is a breath of fresh air.
All of that may be enough to attract moviegoers who have never seen Downton Abbey but it’s hard to say. This is a movie for the fans, and it simply feels like watching a couple of episodes back to back on a bigger screen — with better snacks.
It’s all so comfortable and familiar, and spending a few hours with Mary and Edith and Carson and Mrs. Hughes is like catching up with old friends you haven’t seen in a while.
There are some new characters to welcome into our hearts, and the promise that Downton Abbey will still be around in a hundred years.
I hope that’s true but I’m glad the movie takes place only a year after we last saw everyone. I don’t know if I’m ready to watch a new generation of Crawleys texting each other and waiting for packages to be delivered from Amazon.
