For the first time in many years, we had Thanksgiving in our house rather than go out to one of the many amazing holiday buffets we’ve discovered all around San Diego.
My sister’s family couldn’t come down this year, but they sent us the gorgeous centerpiece that decorated our table. Although they were there in spirit, they were very much missed in person.
Because, as you know, I don’t cook, we ordered the holiday dinner from Whole Foods so all we would have to do is stick everything in the oven. Michael made a quick trip to Costco to add his favorite apple pie and a Tuxedo cake.
My mom, thanks to individual requests from each member of the family, made potato latkes for the Chanukah part of Thanksgivukkah, baked ziti for my newly-vegetarian daughter, apple cake for my son and her signature mandel bread for my husband.
Everything was delicious, and there was enough food to feed a small country.
My favorite part of the night was, as always, the sharing of our thankful lists. We cried, we laughed, we learned some surprising things about each other.
We also celebrated Chanukah with gifts that were thoughtful and generous in spirit. And sometimes hilarious.
It was a really special day — one that gives me another reason to be grateful. And no one even missed the all-you-can-eat shrimp.
