I would have sworn I first watched The Little Mermaid with my kids but since the movie is now celebrating its 25th anniversary, that means they weren’t even born when it first came out. And that means I was rocking to “Under The Sea” and “Kiss the Girl” by myself! Ha ha!

So I guess we’ve come full circle because Walt Disney Records has just released The Legacy Collection: The Little Mermaid, my kids are grown and out of the house, and I’m once again rocking “Under The Sea” and “Kiss the Girl” in my car all by myself!

I adore the music of The Little Mermaid — and, apparently, so do millions of other moviegoers. That’s why this soundtrack — one of the most beloved of all time — is the latest addition to The Legacy Collection, a collectible series which celebrates the anniversaries of some of Disney’s most classic and cherished movies.

The Little Mermaid collection features the songs and score from the film by Oscar®-winning composer Alan Menken and lyricist Howard Ashman on Disc One, twelve work tapes and song demos performed by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman on Disc Two, and a gorgeous collectible 20-page booklet. Also included are fascinating liner notes by Alan Menken, John Musker (Co-writer, Director and Producer, The Little Mermaid), and Chris Montan (President of Walt Disney Music), all of which add so much to the listening experience.

“The greatest thing about what we do is create something that works in the moment, but also stands the test of time,” said Menken. “For the last 25 years, a generation has grown up with The Little Mermaid and it has so greatly influenced them. I hear all the time it’s the soundtrack of so many people’s lives, and that’s a thrilling thing.”

He continues, “The Legacy Collection reorganizes the material and allows the listener to be able to draw more out of it and enjoy it on another level. Technology has improved over the decades and going back to the masters results in better representations of the material on these CDs.”

Take it from me (thank you, Sebastian!), these songs sound even better than you remember them. Plus, you may be surprised to realize that, although you have no idea where you put your keys,  you don’t need to look at the lyrics to belt out any of the songs — but they’re included here just in case.

  4. The Little Mermaid is my absolute favorite! This summer I took my daughter to Disneyland, California Adventure – our first ride was The Little Mermaid. Our last ride, The Little Mermaid.

    I’ll be singing for the rest of the day now!

  7. If I win this, it would be for my daughter. She is 24, but over the years we have done everything in Little Mermaid for her – from birthday cakes to graduation cakes to cards to Halloween costumes – it’s all been about The Little Mermaid! She would just LOVE this!

  14. I thought I was finished with Disney but boy am I looking forward to starting all over again from the very beginning with my two new little ones. I see lots of Saturday sleepovers with all of these wonderful movies. Like you though the Little Mermaid music has always been my favorite!

  15. I remember when the little mermaid came out and thinking it was a huge deal! The music, the bright colors and vibrant scenes were all amazing. 25 years later and it’s still played at our house at least once a month!

  19. I love The Little Mermaid! I actually still have the VHS tape my grandpa bought for me in either ’90 or ’91. It may even still have the receipt tucked inside of it too.

  27. I can’t believe it’s been 25 years. I watched this all the time with a little girl I used to babysit as a teenager and now I watch it with my own little girl. This is her favorite movie and I love sharing it with her.
