Growing up in New York, I spent a lot of time in Broadway theaters, watching musicals.
Twenty years after moving across the country, I still go back a couple of times a year to get my fix.
Because I never have time to see all the shows I want, I inevitably miss some that go on to become iconic — like Kinky Boots. And once a Broadway show has completed its run, that’s it. You can catch it if you’re lucky enough to see a touring company version but, otherwise, it’s over.
That’s why I was thrilled to learn that Fathom Events was bringing Kinky Boots to theaters around the country for two nights only. I saw it last night at Regal Mira Mesa in San Diego and it will be back on June 29. I might, too, because I absolutely fell in love with it.
I honestly had no idea what Kinky Boots was about so it was an unexpected joy for me from beginning to end.
Kinky Boots is the story of Charlie Price, who is about to leave behind provincial Northampton and set off for London with his status-conscious fiance, when his father dies and he inherits his failing shoe factory.
He has no idea how to turn the business around until he randomly meets Lola, a drag queen who introduces him to an untapped market. The drag queens need good boots!
Charlie partners with Lola, and has to convince his employees to embrace the idea in order to save their jobs.
With a stellar cast, a book by Harvey Fierstein, fantastic songs from Cyndi Lauper and rousing dance numbers choreographed by Jerry Mitchell, Kinky Boots is impossible to resist. Its message of opening your mind and heart and accepting people for who they are is more timely than ever.
Kinky Boots closed on Broadway just a few months ago after six years, six Tony Awards (including Best Musical), 2,507 regular performances and 34 previews. It’s the 25th longest-running production in Broadway history.
Filmed during a performance at the Adelphi Theatre in London, this big-screen presentation is the next best thing to being there. For those who will never get to see it in person, Fathom Events’ innovative way of bringing Kinky Boots — a show with both soles and soul — to the public is a real gift.
Mark June 29 on your calendar and find a theater near you to see Kinky Boots here.
