midweek at the oasis: matthew mcconaughey, april fool’s day, baby elephants and believing in good

birthday books

How can it be Wednesday again? Time to celebrate midweek at the Oasis!

Yesterday, one of my friends posted the picture above, from Random House’s Facebook page,  and I thought it was a brilliant idea. What better gift to receive from someone you care about than a book that meant a lot to them, that they really wanted to share with you? It got me thinking about which book I would give someone and, although there are so many I love, I guess it would have to be The World According to Garp by John Irving. Just thinking about the Ellen Jamesians and the undertow and Garp running down the street yelling at drivers to slow down makes me want to read the book again. Which book would you choose to give as a gift?

Last week was April 1, and in case you haven’t seen one of the greatest April Fool’s jokes ever, check this out!

And here’s a special gift for you pretty much guaranteed to make you smile. You know how much I love elephants — just look at the picture above the About Me! — and baby elephants are absolutely irresistible. Click here to watch them learn how to use their trunks!

Alright, alright, alright. If you missed the Matthew McConaughey parody on Saturday Night Live, you can watch it here. It’s hilarious and dead-on.

Let me leave you with this beautiful, powerful, inspiring commercial. Share it with everyone you know, and let’s all take a lesson from this guy.

  1. I love the idea of having your friends give you their favorite books for your birthday. I’m totally going to copy your idea next year.

  2. Was totally planning on sharing that on FB to find out what books my friends would give me! Love it. 🙂

I can’t see the April Fools video, is it the pregnant student one? My iPad won’t let me see!

And I need to watch the MM parody … Soon.

  3. When I was doing my student teaching, my class gave me a very special book. It is called the Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein..a great book..I’d pass it on!

  4. I absolutely love the idea of asking for friend’s favorite reads for a gift! Sometimes people ask what I want for my birthday and I have no idea?! But, this is a great gift that I’d love to receive!

  5. I LOVE this roundup. The commercial? Priceless. I played it once for myself, then I told Gary he had to watch it. So we watched together.

I wish everyone would act as selflessly as that lovely young man did.
