Listen up, readers, because I have found the BEST subscription box for book lovers ever!
Once Upon a Book Club sends you a monthly box which, obviously, includes a book — either adult or young adult, and you can actually email them for the title ahead of time if you’re worried that you already read it or have no interest in it.
But what makes it really special is that they also include 3-5 individually wrapped gifts with page numbers on them. When you get to that page in the book, which has a cute little sticky reminder on it, you open the corresponding package for a carefully-curated item that brings the story to life.
I can’t tell you how much I loved this and looked forward to reaching those pages.
I got to test the March box, which featured The Taster by V.S. Alexander. The novel, about a young woman who was assigned to work as a food taster for Hitler, was excellent. I read it in two days, not just because the story was riveting — not to mention scarily timely — but also because I couldn’t wait to open each gift.
These were not shlocky little trinkets. They’re items I will actually use and one of them (page 117) kind of took my breath away in the context of the story.
Once Upon a Book Club also does a live unboxing on Facebook and Instagram each month so you can open your gifts along with the community, and you can ask questions and discuss what you’ve read so far.
This whole subscription is such a brilliant idea, and I’m convinced people would read more if they got “rewarded” along the way with real objects that made them feel like they were part of the story.
I’m hoping Once Upon a Book Club will send me future boxes as well because I would definitely be one of their biggest champions! Looking at their past selections, I’m bummed that I missed books like Lilac Girls, The Ringmaster’s Wife and Beasts of Extraordinary Circumstance.

What a unique concept! I feel like this is the first bookworm-targeted subscription box that has a very interactive way of opening your other gifts in the box
