midweek at the oasis: horses vs frogs, conscious uncoupling and “frozen”

horse and frog

This has been going around Facebook, and I have to admit it took me awhile to find the horse in this picture. Now, it seems, I can pretty much only see the horse! Do you see it? This is a great way to keep your brain working (so is this) and learn to look at things from a different perspective!

Of course, the big topic of conversation this week was Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin’s “conscious uncoupling.” I’d love to know what you think about this. I’m sad for them and appreciate that she’s trying to find a way to soften the blow of divorce but doesn’t she have a good friend to tell her that she’s coming off as pretentious and alienating people who would probably rally around her in support?

On top of that, she then did an E! interview, sparking “A Working Mom’s Open Letter to Gwyneth Paltrow,” which the New York Post picked up and you can read here, along with the follow-up article here. I wish the best to Gwyneth, Chris, Apple and Moses and would now like to stop hearing from them for a while.

In other news, I’m happy to report that Frozen has just become the top-grossing animated film of all time, surpassing The Lion King and proving that sister love rules. In celebration, here’s the gorgeous Let It Go by Idina Menzel (or Adele Dazeem, as John Travolta has referred to her), which has made her the first person ever to win a Tony Award and have a Top 10 hit. It’s already been viewed over 167 million times. Good luck getting the tune out of your head.

While we’re talking about amazing singers, I’m still trying to answer this question that I saw on Facebook this morning. Bruce Springsteen? Joni Mitchell? I can’t pick just one! Who would you choose?

  1. Oh my goodness, all of my kids love let it go, so I would have to say that one. It would make them so happy. We had Belle at Little Miss’ birthday party and my girls asked her to sing. HA

  2. Wow! We still have the recording of Idina Menzel at the Oscars. Glad to know this! Although I do still love the Lion King. šŸ™‚ I’m really slow because I still haven’t found the horse even after 20 minutes of staring at this picture!

  3. I love this roundup, Lois. Great idea.

Tired of Chris and what’s-her-name, too…

Great question about what singer. Do they have to be alive? (Since this IS a fantasy) Dead: FRANK!!!!!! Alive: Sting because he’s so damn sexy, but in reality BRUCE! Or female: Carole King

  4. It took me a few seconds but I finally saw the horse. Hmmm. Musical artist? Maybe Bruce Springsteen. Yeah. Him.

  5. What a fun post šŸ˜‰ Here we go in order, I think anyway. It took me a few to see the horse, boy did I see a lot of other things before that though, lol! Conscious uncoupling just sounds so ridiculous! Honestly, I like Gwyneth as an actress, but I could totally care less about her personal life as long as she is healthy, of course! Frozen – haven’t seen that yet. My son and hubs won’t watch it with me.. so I have to wait a bit. Heard the song once and totally hated it, not going to listen again.. because I do not need it in my head… from everything I’ve heard, it’s addicting! Now, last but not least… an artist performing for me … that is a seriously hard question. I am coming up blank! I’ll have to get back to you on that one! Thanks for the fun-ness šŸ˜‰

  6. If I could have an artist stop by and sing, it would probably have to be Billy Joel or Justin Timberlake. One, because I adore both of them and two, because my kids wouldn’t agree if I tried to request someone for them.

  7. One artist – past Janis Joplin – current – Blake Shelton … crazy huh! I love all kinds of music!

I seen the horse before the frog – crazy!

  8. I’ve really got to see Frozen. I dismissed it since I’ve got boys, but I feel like we’re missing out on a modern classic here, and I’m experiencing FOMO now. Ack!

You broached the Gwyneth topic way more diplomatically than I did. But then, I saw a splendid opportunity for snark. Is it the East Coast in me? šŸ˜‰

And I did see the horse! After a solid minute of staring. What do I win! šŸ™‚

  9. Ahh, that horse will be the end of me!! Lol! I’m usually so good at these but that silly horse completely refuses to appear for me and it doesn’t seem to matter how many people try to help me with it!! Lol!

Conscious Uncoupling is one phrase I could really live without, but of course I wish all involved well. As for the Let it Go, I have a 12 year old daughter who believes she is a princess so I hear that song all the time and really love it! I love the movie Frozen and was so excited that unlike most princess movies, a man didn’t save them, but the love the sisters had for each other did. What a great message for girls and boys! As always I love visiting your site!

    1. Thanks, Kathy! I totally agree about Frozen — I watched it with my 21 year old daughter and we LOVED that! Okay, the horse took me a while, too. Tilt your head to the right and you’ll see that the two little triangles that look like the frog’s back legs are actually the horse’s ears! The stuff the frog is sitting on is actually the horse’s main. The frog’s eye is the horse’s nostril. Can you see it now?!

  10. I teach a class on process improvement and we use that photo a lot. It teaches us to solve a problem we need to step back and see it from all angles.

  11. Re: question on who would you like to have come and sing to you? She’s not with us anymore, but Karen Carpenter would be my choice. I would also dig having Bryan Ferry or David Bowie serenade me.
