Before I share our day two adventures, I think I should clear up a couple of misconceptions about Scottsdale, in general, and the Phoenician, in particular.
1. First of all, contrary to popular belief, Scottsdale is not just a spa location. Trust me, this kind of surprised me, too, having gone there every year for, well, spa weekends. When I called my sister and told her some of the things we were doing, she kept saying, “I didn’t know they had that. Why didn’t we do that?”
In fact, there is so much to do in Scottsdale that I didn’t have time to write my daily posts while we were there! Now that I’m home, it’s time to get to work – although, for some reason, no one seemed to feel sorry for me when I told them I had to go back to San Diego. (My husband and I do realize we were probably leaving from and heading to two of the only airports in the country that weren’t having weather delays.)
2. Scottsdale is not the Wild West. Although the southwestern influences are evident and celebrated throughout the city, Scottsdale has an unexpected modern sophistication. We actually happened to visit during the Hashknife Pony Express’ annual delivery, and this video of the event perfectly demonstrates Scottsdale’s eclectic combination of history and trendiness as the riders steer their horses past my beloved Anthropologie! Top-notch stores, restaurants and art galleries mean you may want to bring an empty suitcase with you.
3. As you saw from my photos yesterday, the Phoenician is gorgeous and luxurious. It is also welcoming, affordable and down to earth. This is not a place where you’ll feel intimidated, and it’s a great vacation destination for families, with nine – yes, nine! –pools and a 165-foot water slide, an activity center featuring board games, video games and movies, and the Funicians Club for kids.
We talked to a few locals, who told us they’ve enjoyed many staycations at the Phoenician, especially during the hot summer, when rates are a steal and there’s no reason to go outside other than for a swim.
Because people kept telling us we must see this and mustn’t miss that, Michael and I didn’t get to do half of what we wanted to do in Scottsdale! We will definitely be back soon.
Meanwhile, on to our second day which started high above the city …
