“love the coopers”

Love the Coopers

I love holiday-themed movies because they always end with the message that family is the greatest gift of all.

Even if everyone in your family is crazy.

A couple of weeks ago, Michael and I saw the trailer for Love the Coopers and immediately turned to each other and said, “I want to see this.”

What a cast, right?! Alan Arkin, John Goodman, Ed Helms, Diane Keaton, Jake Lacy, Anthony Mackie, Amanda Seyfried, June Squibb, Marisa Tomei, Olivia Wilde — so many of my favorites are here.

As you can see from the trailer, the story follows four generations of extended family who come together for their annual Christmas Eve celebration. As the evening unfolds, a series of unexpected visitors and unlikely events turn the night upside down, leading them all toward a surprising rediscovery of family bonds and the spirit of the holiday.

Because Thanksgiving is coming up in less than three weeks — how can that even be? — the movie got me thinking about our own family traditions. My top top favorite is having everyone write out a list of ten things they’re thankful for — and then going around the table, reading them out loud one at a time.

This makes us cry every single year. I am so touched that our kids never argue about doing this, and that it’s as meaningful to them as it is to Michael and me.
