One could argue that songs are literature set to music — sure, we can think of some exceptions, too, but even a snappy little Beach Boys tune tells a vivid story.
Artists for Literacy, a non-profit organization dedicated to enriching the lives of reading-challenged children and adults, has taken that idea one step further with a database of more than 300 “Songs Inspired by Literature.” The online library features a surprisingly wide range of genres, and includes everything from Fiona Apple’s “Sleep to Dream” (based on “Hamlet”) to Warren Zevon’s “Basket Case” (inspired by Carl Hiaasen’s book ).
Each title includes song lyrics, literary sources and relevant links, making the site a valuable resource for educators who just might be able to convince a student to read the daunting “1984” after listening to David Bowie’s more accessible musical version. Best of all, Artists for Literacy has compiled two unique CDs featuring gems like “The Summer I Read Colette” (our song of the week) as well as contributions from top artists like Aimee Mann, Bruce Springsteen, and Suzanne Vega.
Proceeds help Artists for Literacy continue its important mission, but the ones who really benefit are the lucky listeners.
