When we ran into Mr. Ellie Pooh (aka Dr. Karl Wald) at a crafts fair a while back, the first thing he told us to do was to take a whiff of his gorgeous handmade stationery. Always game for a challenge, we sniffed while he matter-of-factly explained that all of the journals, photo albums and note cards we had been “ooh”-ing and “aah”-ing over were created from elephant dung.
Honestly, that just made us “ooh” and “aah” even more.
So once you get that concern out of the way – nothing here smells! – you can focus on the fact that these beautiful items don’t just look good: they are actually doing good.
In Sri Lanka, home to 10% of the world’s elephants, thousands of these magnificent creatures have been killed in the past 50 years simply because they interfere with human agriculture.
